We celebrated Sea Sunday on 6th August at the 10 am service. The speaker was Cdr. Dai Somerville-Jones from the Mission to Seafarers. Dai spoke about the problems facing seafarers in the 21st century, the loneliness of long months at sea, the poor conditions and the threat of piracy which still exists today. Thank you to everyone for the generous donations which so far has raised £462 for the Mission. Ann Blowers.
The Leprosy Mission
In March we focussed on World Leprosy Sunday. The speaker at our 10 am service was Jarrett Wilson, Regional Manager for The Leprosy Mission. Jarrett spoke about the desperate need to update the Outpatients Department at Purulia Hospital, India. The retiring collection raised £598. Thank you to those who gave so generously to this appeal.
Purulia Hospital appeal update – news from TLM (spring 2017)
Thanks to you, construction is set to begin on a brand new Outpatients’ department for Purulia hospital in October. You responded with overwhelming kindness and generosity when we told you the department was no longer fit for purpose with up to 300 patients a day queuing in overcrowded conditions to see two doctors. Because of the reputation of Purulia hospital and the fact that leprosy patients, usually the poorest of the poor, cannot afford to be treated elsewhere, patients travel for hundreds of miles to its Outpatients’ department. There is not enough room for sick and disabled people to rest and there are only two toilets. There is little privacy when being examined by a doctor. But thanks to you, construction of a brand new department is scheduled for October in time for a grand opening in mid-2018! The new department will have a large waiting room, a canteen serving healthy food for patients and staff, six consultation rooms, two minor procedure rooms, a new pharmacy, a toilet block and two lab areas. In addition, two doctors’ houses on the hospital site have been refurbished to attract new doctors to Purulia. Thank you so much for enabling hundreds of patients to be treated in comfort and with dignity each day!
